![]() ![]() Then Illumination Entertainment came out with a new minion-the crazy, screaming, mutant purple ones (the evil minions) for Despicable Me 2. What else can you say but, BAAAHHH! ![]() We even have a minion magnet on the car, waving “Bello!” to people as we drive down the road. These funny, banana-loving, yellow pill-shaped critters just make me smile. Hope you have a happy and safe Halloween filled with lots of smiles and Reese’s (my favorite)! And if your little one is dressing as one of these little yellow guys and loves them as much as we do, consider throwing some themed cupcakes together to make their night. The Despicable Me Minions are probably my favorite silly cartoon side-kicks (although the Madagascar Penguins are close). Halloween may not be the best holiday to celebrate in a place where all we talk about is cutting back on sugar, but since I author a baking blog, I’m not exactly one to talk :) I love Halloween! We still saw patients while wearing our costumes, so we opted for blue scrub pants that made these minion costumes totally dentist-friendly. That’s why I loved making these Calliou cookies too – bald heads, simple eyes, and drawn-on smiles, can’t beat it! Just as they’re easy to make into dessert, minions are really simple costumes too. All we needed was a decked out ski hat, a yellow t-shirt, and some suspenders. Sometimes creating character-themed desserts can be difficult because it’s hard to exactly replicate cartoons in food form, but these are an exception since the minions have such a simple shape. The amount of blue food coloring to get this color will definitely dye your tongue blue, which might be fun for kids, but if blue frosting is not appetizing to you, try white frosting with blue sprinkles or sparkling sugar! This is definitely a kid-friendly project so get your sugar-high kids into the kitchen, put on Despicable Me in the background, and start baking :) You can use whatever combination of cupcake flavor and frosting you want, but I opted to go with some dark chocolate cupcakes baked in dark brown liners and a creamy peanut butter frosting dyed blue to match the minion outfit. Thankfully Twinkies are back on shelves, since they make the perfect minion body! With an edible marker and some white chocolate eyes, you’ve got yourself a minion in no time. ![]() And making minions in cupcake form couldn’t be easier. I mean seriously, how cute are these? I really love the movie Despicable Me, it’s truly entertaining for all ages and the scenes featuring the minions are hilarious. Word on the street is minion is one of the most popular costumes this year, so I’m sure there are a few of you out there that will enjoy these cupcakes as much as we did! This year my fellow first year co-residents and I were all minions and I made these cupcakes to get us in the spirit for the night we put together our costumes. It’s so fun to hear all of the costumes and see their excitement, always followed by some brushing advice shortly after of course :) The best part of it all is that if you practice pediatrics, you’re basically required to dress up for Halloween at work too. While in September I was asking my patients how their new teaches and classes were, this month it’s been all Halloween talk. Sure sometimes it’s extremely exhausting and I leave the room sweaty from wrestling the squirmy ones, but those little smiles and bubbling personalities are enough to keep us going back every day. ![]()
